Does it have anything to do with earths magnetic forces.If yes then do we have to take magnetic variation ( diff between tru North and the local North) into account?

East -west is recommended in India, not N-S, esp. head towards North is not. But sleep in which ever position feels right for you. You will know in a few days whether it is OK or not.
